Introduction & Background. The aim of the Society is to promote
interest in geology and its allied sciences for people of
all levels of geological knowledge, ranging from the
interested amateur up to professional geologist. This is
achieved by holding regular monthly meetings in
Farnham at which invited speakers cover all aspects of
the geological spectrum, ranging from palaeontology
through to structural geology, vulcanism, earthquakes and
environmental effects. The monthly meetings are held in The Barley Room, The Maltings, Farnham, generally on the second Friday of the
month (7.30 for 8.00pm) Visitors and potential new members are
always welcome. In addition, the Society arranges many
varied and interesting field
trips throughout the year,
ranging in length from day outings up to visits lasting a
week or more. Week-long Field trips undertaken in
recent years within the UK include visits to Scotland,
Wales, The Lake District, Devon and Cornwall; these have
been supplemented by shorter weekend/day visits to
Dorset, Isle of Sheppey, Cotswolds and numerous locations
within 60 miles of Farnham. The Society regularly
arranges trips overseas, and has in the past visited the
USA, France, the volcanic islands of Italy (Sicily,
Lipari, Vulcano and Stromboli) and, in August 1999,
undertook a combined geology/eclipse-viewing trip taking
in Germany, Austria and Hungary. More recent trips
undertaken include visits to: Ireland (2001), a return visit to Italy's volcanoes (2002),the Greek Islands (2003), the
US/Canadian Rockies (2004), Arran (2005), the Languedoc region of France (2006), Eire (2008), The Isle of Man
(2009), Pas de Calais (2010), Madeira (2011) and Northumberland (2012). The Society is also registered as a
Local Group within the Geologists' Association and
regularly exhibits its achievements and findings at
meetings arranged by the Association. |
